Using Reckna
What is envelope budgeting?
You give the money you actually have a job by assigning it to envelopes (categories) — rent, groceries, transport, and so on. You spend from those envelopes and carry whatever's left into next month. It's a proven, zero-based method that shows you exactly what's safe to spend. The User Guide explains how Reckna does it.
How does Reckna know which category to use?
It learns. When you log a transaction for a payee, Reckna remembers the category you chose and suggests it next time. Correct it once and it updates — no rules to set up.
Can I split one purchase across several categories?
Yes. When adding a transaction, choose Split across categories and add a line per category; Reckna checks the lines add up to the total. It stays a single movement on your account.
Can I move money between envelopes, or set savings goals?
Both. Move money between envelopes in a tap to cover an overspend, and give any envelope a monthly or save-by-date funding goal with progress tracking. See the guide.
Can I add a transaction without opening the app?
Yes — from the Home Screen widget, by voice with Siri, in a Shortcut, from Spotlight, or via the share sheet. Each opens a pre-filled entry to confirm.
Does Reckna work on iPad and Mac?
It's a native iPhone and iPad app, with an adaptive multi-column layout on iPad so you see more at once.
Can I lock the app?
Yes. Turn on App lock in Settings to require Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. It re-locks when the app goes to the background.
Privacy and your data
Does Reckna connect to my bank?
No — by design. Reckna is manual. You add accounts and transactions yourself (or import a CSV). There is no bank linking, no aggregator, and no third party in the middle.
Where is my data stored?
On your device. If you turn on iCloud sync (a Reckna Pro feature), your data is stored in your own private iCloud account — never on any server we operate, and nowhere we can read it. See the Privacy Policy.
Will it work without internet?
Yes. Reckna is fully usable offline, with no network and no iCloud account. Sync is optional.
How do I get my data out?
From Settings you can export everything to a documented CSV, or take a full JSON backup at any time. Your data is never locked in.
Can I import data from another app?
Yes. Reckna imports the same CSV format it exports. Export a transactions CSV from your other app, match the columns, and import it from Settings. Import only adds rows — importing the same file twice will duplicate it.
How do I move to a new phone?
Either turn on iCloud sync (Reckna Pro) and sign in on the new device, or take a full backup on the old phone and restore it on the new one from Settings → Your data.
Reckna Pro and purchases
What does Reckna Pro include?
Reckna is free for single-currency, on-device budgeting with no limits on accounts or transactions. Reckna Pro unlocks multiple currencies with automatic conversion and private iCloud sync across your devices, as a one-time lifetime purchase or a yearly subscription with a free trial.
What happens if my subscription lapses?
Nothing is lost. Your data stays on your device, and any multi-currency data still displays. You simply can't add new foreign-currency accounts or sync until you renew.
How do I manage or cancel a subscription?
Subscriptions are handled by Apple. On your device, open Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions to view, change, or cancel.
